American Firewear- American Firewear is well known in the fire turnout industry. They make several different types of fire turnouts, all of which are good. Best Fire Gear has broken down all the different types of American Firewear turnouts in our review.


One huge thing that American Firewear has going for them is that their parent company is Honeywell. Honeywell has proven time and time that they make some of the best fire gear, including fire turnouts. American Firewear makes a few different types of fire gear including fire turnouts, fire gloves, and fire hoods. There are four main categories of American Firewear turnouts; Incident response, General purpose/extrication, Wildland, and EMS.

Incident Response- Designed for those critical incidents in which you need some durable clothing yet plenty of mobility. The American Firewear Incident Response jumpsuit is great for Search and Rescue. Here are the technical specs for the American Firewear Incident Response jumpsuit:

General Purpose/Extrication- In this category of American Firewear turnouts, the wearer has a lot of options to customize their turnout to their need. The basic fire turnouts used in this category are the American Firewear EMS jumpsuits or the American Firewear Wildland jacket and deluxe pants. Using those turnouts and jumpsuits you can then begin adding the options to them and creating your perfect turnout. American Firewear has created four sets of general purpose/extrication turnouts using this theory; two jumpsuits and two two-piece fire turnouts.

American Firewear XJ4000T- This is the American Firewear #3000 basic jumpsuit with padded elbow reinforcements, padded knee reinforcements, and cotton lined sleeves. This jumpsuit does not meet NFPA 1977 criteria.

American Firewear XJ6000T- This is the American Firewear #3000 basic jumpsuit with self material elbow reinforcements, and self material knee reinforcements. There is no padding in the elbows and knees.

American Firewear X800T- This consists of the American Firewear #500 fire jacket with a stethoscope pocket, pencil/flashlight pocket, mic tab, padded elbow reinforcements, and cotton lined sleeves. In addition to the fire jacket, this two piece set consists of the American Firewear #500 fire pants with a multi tool pocket on the leg, and padded knee reinforcements. This two piece fire turnout does not meet NFPA 1977 criteria.

American Firewear X900T- This consists of the American Firewear #500 fire jacket with a stethoscope pocket, pencil/flashlight pocket, mic tab, self material elbow reinforcements, and cotton lined sleeves. In addition to the fire jacket, this two piece set consists of the American Firewear #500 fire pants with a multi tool pocket on the leg, and self material knee reinforcements.

Wildland- American Firewear makes a fire jumpsuit and two piece fire turnouts designed specifically for Wildland fire fighting. All of them meet or exceed the NFPA 1977 requirements.

American Firewear Wildland two piece turnout- This turnout is very durable and lightweight. It is made out of 9 ounce flame resistant Indura cotton, 9 ounce flame resistant Indura ultrasoft twill, and 6 ounce Nomex IIIA. The Wildland fire jacket and inner zipper with hook and pile closure, stand up collar, plenty of pockets, and a detachable utility/glove strap. There are two different types of fire pants you can get, a standard version or deluxe version. The standard pants have a heavy duty waistband with elastic back, zipper/snap closure, oversized belt loops, rear pocket, and hook and pile cinch straps at the cuffs. The deluxe pants have all that plus an extra rear pocket, leg end zippers for easier on/off, and two slant top semi-bellow pockets with hook and pile closure.

American Firewear Wildland Jumpsuits- American Firewear makes one fire jumpsuit designed specifically for Wildland fires. The American Firewear Wildland jumpsuit is lightweight and comfortable. It meets and exceeds the NFPA 1977, 2005 requirements. The Wildland jumpsuit has the following features:

  • 9" Radio Pocket with Mic Tab and Sewn-on Utility Strap on Left Chest

American Firewear EMS Jumpsuits- Designed for the daily grind of EMS with all the necessary tools that a first responder could need. This EMS jumpsuit is very comfortable, useful, and looks good. The American Firewear EMS jumpsuit has the following features:
